How To Brew the Perfect Cup of Coffee

2. Grind Your Beans - The grind size should match your brewing method. Use a coarse grind for French press, medium for drip coffee makers, and a fine grind for espresso. Always grind your beans just before brewing to ensure maximum freshness and flavor. Invest in a high quality grinder like one of these:
3. Measure Your Coffee and Water - The golden ratio is about 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee for every 6 ounces of water. Adjust according to your taste preferences. Use more coffee for a stronger flavor. Use a kitchen scale for more precise measurements; it will make all the difference and catapult your coffee from crappy to amazing! Two tablespoons of grinds will equal roughly 10.5 grams.

4. Choose Your Brewing Method -
Drip Coffee Maker - Easy and convenient. Place a filter in the basket, add your ground coffee, and pour in the appropriate amount of water. Here are a few of our favorites:
French Press - Add coarse grounds to the French press, pour hot water (just below boiling) over the grounds, stir, and let steep for 4 minutes before pressing the plunger down slowly.
Pour-Over - To make pour over coffee, heat water to the ideal temperature (around 195-205°F), rinse your filter with hot water, grind coffee beans to a medium-fine consistency, add grounds to the filter, pour a small amount of water to "bloom" the coffee, then slowly pour the remaining water in a circular motion, allowing the coffee to drip into your cup; a gooseneck kettle provides the best control for pouring.

Espresso Machine - This is the pinnacle of coffee making, in our opinion. A high-quality espresso machine isn't cheap, but the investment will be well worth it over time. Fine grind the coffee, tamp it into the portafilter, and pull your shot. An espresso machine delivers a strong, rich brew just like you would get in a cafe, only this time, you are the barista!

5. Control Your Water Temperature - Aim for water that is between 195°F to 205°F (90°C to 96°C). Too hot or too cold water can affect the extraction and taste. Invest in a kettle with temperature controls!
6. Brew Time - Drip Coffee typically takes about 5 minutes. French Press requires roughly 4-5 minutes of steeping time. If you are using a Pour-Over, you can expect around 3-4 minutes of dripping time after you've boiled your water. If you are making an espresso shot, it will take between 27-35 seconds to pull the shot. If it takes longer than this, or happens faster, the extraction will be affected, greatly impacting the flavor.
7. Enjoy Your Coffee - Serve your coffee immediately. You put a lot of effort into crafting the perfect cup, now it's time to enjoy it! Add milk, cream, or other flavors to make it just right!
8. Clean Your Equipment - Don't sleep on this part. Take care of your machine and it will take care of your for years to come! Clean your coffee maker, French press, or espresso machine after each use to prevent buildup and ensure the best-tasting coffee.
